The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is located on the island of Palawan. Its most prominent feature is the Cabayugan River, which flows for 8.2 kilometers underground through a spectacular limestone karst cave system before emptying directly into the South China Sea. This journey makes it one of the longest navigable underground rivers in the world. A boat tour takes visitors into the first few kilometers of the cave, revealing massive chambers, memorable stalactite and stalagmite formations, and large colonies of bats. The park encompasses a complete 'mountain-to-sea' ecosystem and protects some of the most significant forests in Asia. The area is a conservation hotspot, home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including many endemic species like the Palawan peacock-pheasant, Palawan bearcat, and the Palawan hornbill.

Usually reached via organized boat tours from Sabang village. The journey involves a short boat ride from the pier to the beach entrance of the cave system.
Best season
The dry season, typically from November to May, features the best sea conditions for the boat ride. The rainy season can lead to tour cancellations due to rough waters.

The main activity is a guided boat tour inside the cave system, so physical exertion is minimal. The short walk from the boat drop-off to the cave entrance involves sandy paths.
What to bring
Bring a dry bag for electronics, comfortable sandals that can get wet, and a life jacket is usually provided by the tour operator. A lightweight rain jacket is recommended during transit.
