Calauit Safari Park (Philippines)

Weather…

Calauit Safari Park is a 3,700-hectare wildlife sanctuary located on Calauit Island in Palawan province, established in 1976 by a decree from President Ferdinand Marcos. The project aimed to host endangered African wildlife in an environment similar to their natural habitat in Kenya. Introduced species included giraffes, zebras, and various antelopes, which were transported to the island by ship. Over the decades, the park has also seen the proliferation of endemic Philippine species, such as the Calamian deer and the Palawan bearded pig. The animals roam freely across the island's savanna-like landscape while conservationists manage breeding programs. The park is open to visitors who can participate in guided safaris to witness the interaction between African fauna and local ecology. Situated in the Calamian Islands, the park remains a significant site for both international wildlife preservation and regional ecotourism.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry months from November to May are optimal for exploring the island sanctuary, as the dirt trails and savanna areas are much easier to traverse without the heavy tropical rains.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning safaris are the absolute best for observing both the roaming African mammals and the endemic Palawan species before the intense midday tropical heat sets in.
📜
Etiquette
Maintain a safe, respectful distance from all free-roaming wildlife, never attempt to feed the animals independently, and always listen to the specific instructions of your assigned guide.
🎒
What to bring
Pack light, breathable clothing, robust walking footwear, and ensure you have reliable binoculars to clearly spot distant wildlife across the expansive open grassy plains of the island.
🧭
Getting there
The sanctuary is accessible via a boat ride to Calauit Island, typically arranged as part of a comprehensive tour from Coron, which requires careful logistical planning well in advance.
🦌
What to expect
Wildlife sightings in these vast open areas can vary significantly, so keep a very watchful eye on the landscape and rely heavily on your guide's local expertise to locate the resting herds.
