War Cemetery

A solemn, beautifully maintained resting place reflecting the region's WWII history.

Kokopo became the bustling capital of Papua New Guinea's East New Britain Province after the devastating volcanic eruptions of 1994 buried the former capital, Rabaul. Situated along the beautiful shores of Blanche Bay, Kokopo has rapidly grown into an animated commercial hub while maintaining its remarkable tropical allure. The town is framed by lush, green plantations and the ever-present, smoking silhouettes of Mount Tavurvur and other nearby volcanoes. The town is famous for its spirited Kokopo Market, one of the best in the South Pacific, where locals sell fresh tropical fruits, exotic vegetables, and traditional Tolai crafts. The surrounding waters provide a spectacular playground for water activities, with world-class scuba diving and snorkeling among pristine coral reefs and submerged WWII shipwrecks. The local diet heavily features fresh tuna, reef fish, and dishes slow-cooked in a traditional 'mumu' earth oven. Getting to Kokopo is mostly done via air, with regular domestic flights arriving at Tokua Airport from Port Moresby. The region is rich in history, from the German colonial era to major World War II relics, which can be explored through local guided tours. Despite its growth, Kokopo remains a relaxed, tropical outpost where the jungle meets the sea.
