Rohtas Fort (Pakistan)

Weather…

The Rohtas Fort near Jhelum is a masterpiece of Muslim military architecture in Central and South Asia, built between 1541 and 1548 by Sher Shah Suri. The massive fortress was intended to block the advance of the deposed Mughal Emperor Humayun while securing control over the local Gakhar tribes. The fortification walls, extending over four kilometers, are up to 12 meters thick and punctuated by 68 massive bastions and 12 monumental gates. The architecture blends artistic traditions of the Indian subcontinent with those of the Islamic West and is considered a precursor to later Mughal architecture. Despite numerous wars, the fortress remained largely undamaged and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Particularly noteworthy are the intricate stoneworks on the gates, such as the Sohail Gate. Today, Rohtas Fort is one of Pakistan's most significant historical sites, offering visitors insights into the strategic brilliance of the Suri dynasty.
