Derawar Fort (Pakistan)

Weather…

Derawar Fort is a massive, square fortress in the heart of the Cholistan Desert in Bahawalpur, Punjab. Its towering walls, supported by 40 enormous circular bastions, are visible from many miles away, standing as a testament to medieval defensive engineering. Originally established in the 9th century by Rai Jajja Bhatti, a Hindu Rajput ruler, it was completely rebuilt in its current form in 1733 by the Nawabs of Bahawalpur. The walls have a total circumference of about 1,500 meters and rise to a height of 30 meters above the desert floor. Inside the fort, the ruins of barracks, residential quarters, and underground chambers tell stories of its past military significance. Adjacent to the fort is the striking white marble Derawar Mosque, which reflects the architectural style of the Mughal era. The site is also significant for its proximity to the royal graveyard of the Bahawalpur state. Despite its remote location and harsh desert climate, Derawar Fort remains one of Pakistan's most visually striking and historically rich landmarks.
