Takht-i-Bahi is an exceptionally well-preserved Buddhist monastic complex located on a top near Mardan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Founded in the 1st century CE during the Indo-Parthian and Kushan periods, it served as a major center for Buddhist learning until the 7th century. The name translates to Throne of the Water Spring, referring to the natural springs that once supplied the monks with fresh water. The site is divided into several functional zones, including a court of stupas, monastic cells, an assembly hall, and a tantric meditation complex. Its elevated position helped protect the structures from various invasions throughout history, allowing it to remain relatively intact compared to other sites in the region. The architecture is characterized by the use of local stone blocks and sophisticated drainage systems that demonstrate advanced engineering skills. In 1980, Takht-i-Bahi was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural and historical significance to the Gandhara civilization.
