Chitral Gol National Park is located in the Chitral District of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, covering an area of approximately 7,750 hectares. The area was originally the private hunting ground of the Mehtar of Chitral before being designated as a national park in 1984. It is world-renowned as one of the most significant sanctuaries for the endangered Markhor, a wild goat species known for its spiral horns. The park's terrain is extremely rugged, with elevations ranging from 1,450 meters to over 5,000 meters, supporting a diverse range of sub-alpine and alpine flora. In addition to the Markhor, the park is home to snow leopards, golden eagles, and Himalayan vultures. The dense stands of Himalayan cedar (Deodar) and oak provide a critical habitat for these high-altitude species. The park serves as a vital center for wildlife conservation and features spectacular viewpoints for observing the Tirich Mir, the highest peak of the Hindu Kush range.

Getting there
The park is normally reached via a steep, narrow jeep track winding up from Chitral Town; hiring a sturdy 4x4 vehicle with an experienced local driver is typically required to navigate this rough route.
Best season
Late spring through early autumn provides the most favorable weather, as winter snowfall often blocks access and makes the steep mountain passes too treacherous for normal vehicles.
Terrain & paths
The environment consists of deep rocky gorges, alpine meadows, and dense cedar forests, demanding physical fitness if you plan to hike the unpaved and sometimes poorly marked mountain trails.
What to bring
High-quality binoculars are essential for spotting the elusive Markhor goats on the cliffs, along with robust hiking boots, a reliable daypack, and plenty of provisions since facilities are nonexistent.

Vehicles are usually left at a small designated staging area or guesthouse clearing near the park's main entry point, where visitors must proceed on foot to explore the higher elevations.

Be prepared for sudden weather changes in the high mountains, stay hydrated to prevent altitude sickness, and avoid hiking alone due to the rugged wilderness and presence of large wildlife.
