Nampo, a port city at the mouth of the Taedong River into the Yellow Sea, is the maritime gateway to Pyongyang and a crucial economic hub. The city is best known for the West Sea Barrage, an eight-kilometer-long structure that separates the river from the sea to secure fresh water for agriculture and improve shipping routes. This gigantic project is a symbol of the North Korean Juche idea of self-reliance. Nampo is also a center for shipbuilding, glass production, and fishing. Its port is one of the busiest in the country and is crucial for international trade, especially with China. Near the city are several important industrial facilities and agricultural farms that benefit from the water supply provided by the dam.
