Sungbo's Eredo (Nigeria)

Weather…

Sungbo's Eredo is a massive system of ditches and embankments located in southwestern Nigeria, recognized as the largest pre-colonial monument in Africa. Situated in Ogun State, it was constructed between 800 and 1000 AD according to archaeological estimates. The entire system stretches for approximately 160 kilometers, enclosing an area of about 40 kilometers in diameter. The construction involved moving millions of cubic meters of earth, demonstrating a highly organized society with significant manpower in the rainforest zone. Local folklore links the structure to Bilikisu Sungbo, a wealthy childless widow often identified with the biblical Queen of Sheba. Functionally, the Eredo likely served as a defensive fortification and a territorial marker for the Ijebu Kingdom. The ditches can reach depths of up to 20 meters, and today much of the site is overgrown by dense rainforest, which aids in its preservation but poses challenges for archaeological mapping.
