Known for its rich maritime history and sheltered waters, it is a premier destination for boating, fishing, and beach holidays. The town acts as a fantastic base for exploring the dramatic landscapes of the eastern Coromandel. The town is blessed with beautiful sandy shores and easy access to some of the region's best coastal attractions. Cooks Beach gives a long stretch of golden sand well-suited for relaxing walks and swimming, easily accessible via a short passenger ferry ride from the Whitianga wharf. Just north of the town center lies the beautiful Wharekaho Beach, rich in local Maori history and offering excellent conditions for family outings. Whitianga's esplanade and town center are dotted with excellent seafood restaurants, cafes, and boutique shops, offering a taste of local Coromandel produce. The town is accessible via the easy on the eye State Highway 25, taking about a two-and-a-half-hour scenic drive from Auckland, making it a highly popular weekend getaway.
