- You will likely smell sulfur in the air around the town and geothermal parks-this is completely normal for the area!
- Enjoy a free natural hot spring soak at Spa Park where the Otumuheke Stream meets the Waikato River.
- The weather over the lake can change rapidly, so always bring a windproof jacket, even in summer.

Positioned on the shores of New Zealand's largest freshwater lake, Taupō is an internationally renowned destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The town sits atop a massive, dormant volcanic caldera that forms the lake itself. The surrounding region is defined by highly active geothermal zones, bubbling mud pools, and soothing natural hot springs that have been enjoyed by Māori tribes for centuries. Just a few kilometers north of the town center lies the thunderous Huka Falls, where the mighty Waikato River is squeezed through a narrow rock ravine, creating a wide-open display of natural power. The lake and the river also make Taupō one of the world's premier destinations for trout fishing, offering crystal-clear waters teeming with brown and rainbow trout. The local culinary scene heavily features freshwater catches alongside modern New Zealand cuisine, often paired with wines from the nearby Hawke's Bay region. Accessible via a scenic drive along the Thermal Explorer Highway or through the local Taupō Airport, the town serves as an excellent base for exploring the central North Island, including the majestic Tongariro National Park to the south.
