Afsluitdijk (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Afsluitdijk is a monumental enclosure dam that connects the provinces of North Holland and Friesland, separating the former Zuiderzee from the Wadden Sea. The structure was constructed between 1927 and 1932 as part of the Zuiderzee Works, aimed at protecting the hinterland from storm surges and reclaiming new agricultural land. Spanning 32 kilometers in length, the dam transformed the saltwater Zuiderzee into the freshwater reservoir known as the IJsselmeer. The project was executed according to the designs of engineer Cornelis Lely and is regarded as one of the most significant hydraulic engineering feats of the 20th century worldwide. A major motorway runs across the dam, and large lock complexes at both ends facilitate shipping and water management. Today, the Afsluitdijk is not only a protective barrier but also a hub for innovations in sustainable energy and coastal defense.
