Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park (Nepal)

Weather…

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is Nepal's ninth national park, located on the northern fringe of the Kathmandu Valley. Established in 2002, its primary function is to protect the vital watershed that supplies millions of liters of drinking water to the capital city daily. The park covers 159 square kilometers across the Kathmandu, Nuwakot, and Sindhupalchowk districts. Its vegetation transitions from subtropical to temperate forests, featuring oak, pine, and rhododendron trees that host over 300 bird species and several rare orchids. Shivapuri Peak, at 2,732 meters, is the second highest point on the valley rim and has expansive views of the central Himalayas. The park is also culturally significant as the source of the holy Bagmati and Bishnumati rivers and contains several religious sites, including the Nagi Gompa nunnery. It serves as a critical lung for the Kathmandu Valley, regulating the local climate and providing a natural escape for residents and tourists alike.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The national park is easily accessible from Kathmandu, typically serving as a quick escape from the bustling city. Visitors usually start their journey from the southern entrance near Budhanilkantha or Sundarijal.
📅
Best season
The convenient time to explore the dense forests is during the post-monsoon months of autumn or the clear days of spring. Winter gives great visibility, though mornings can be quite chilly at higher elevations.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Trails wind through thick woodlands, varying from well-trodden dirt paths to steep stone steps leading up to the peaks. The elevation gain can be challenging, demanding a reasonable level of physical fitness.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip are highly recommended for navigating the sometimes slippery terrain. Always pack plenty of water, some high-energy snacks, and insect repellent for the forested sections.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicle parking is typically available near the primary entry gates, often for a modest fee charged by local authorities. Taxis or private transport from Kathmandu can easily drop you right at the designated trailheads.
⚠️
Safety
Keep a safe distance from any wildlife encountered, particularly the local monkeys which can occasionally be bold. Since trails can be confusing in the dense forest, sticking to the main paths and bringing a map is advisable.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical hiking excursion in this area generally lasts between four to eight hours depending on the chosen route. Exploring the higher peaks naturally requires allocating a full day for a steady and enjoyable pace.
