Chobhar Dry Port (Nepal)

Weather…

The Chobhar Dry Port, located on the southwestern outskirts of Kathmandu, is Nepal's most modern logistics facility designed to streamline cargo movement in the valley. Built on the site of the former Himal Cement Factory, it was officially inaugurated in 2022. The primary objective of the project is to allow for the customs clearance of imported goods directly near the capital, rather than exclusively at the border crossings. The facility features state-of-the-art warehouses, container yards, and digital clearance systems, developed with financial assistance from the World Bank. Despite initial resistance from the local community over environmental concerns, the port is seen as critical for reducing logistics costs within the Kathmandu Valley. It is strategically linked to the upcoming Kathmandu-Terai Fast Track, which will drastically reduce transportation times from the southern plains.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
The Chobhar Dry Port acts as a vital inland customs and logistics hub for Nepal, facilitating international trade and reducing transit bottlenecks for goods entering the Kathmandu Valley. It represents a significant modernization of the country's economic infrastructure.
🚪
Visiting
Being a secure customs-cleared cargo facility, general public access to the container yards and inspection areas is highly restricted. Tourists cannot tour the internal operational zones, but the large-scale logistics activity can be observed from the perimeter.
👀
Where to view it
The elevated grounds of the nearby Chobhar hill and its historic gorge offer excellent vantage points overlooking the expansive dry port facility below. These spots allow for observing the steady flow of heavy goods vehicles and the organized layout of the port.
🧺
Local products
The port itself does not sell to tourists, but the surrounding Chobhar village features small stalls offering local Nepali snacks, milk tea, and everyday goods. It provides a stark contrast between modern global trade and traditional valley village life.
📆
Active season
The logistics hub operates year-round, processing shipments regardless of the season. Visiting the surrounding hills is most pleasant during the post-monsoon months of October and November, when the skies are clear and the air is fresh.
Nearby
The dry port is situated right next to the famous Chobhar Gorge and the Jal Vinayak Temple, making for a fascinating mix of ancient legend and modern commerce. The photogenic medieval town of Kirtipur is also just a short drive away.
