The Nampula Plateau, often referred to as the Nampula Highlands, spans the central portion of the namesake province in northeastern Mozambique. Geographically, the region is famous for its extraordinary landscape of granite inselbergs that rise dramatically from the surrounding savanna plains. The plateau sits at an average elevation of 300 to 600 meters, serving as a transition zone between the coastal lowlands and the higher mountain ranges further inland. Geologically, the foundation consists of crystalline rocks of the Precambrian basement, sculpted by millions of years of weathering and erosion. The fertile soils found in the intervening valleys support intensive agriculture, with Nampula serving as the primary hub for Mozambique's cashew nut and cotton production. Historically, the plateau has been the heartland of the Makua people and played a significant role in resisting colonial incursions. The city of Nampula, known as the 'City of Inselbergs', is the region's administrative and economic center.
