The Mossuril Coast is located in the Nampula Province of northern Mozambique and is historically closely linked to the nearby Island of Mozambique (Ilha de Moçambique). This coastal region is characterized by shallow lagoons, extensive mangrove forests, and white sandy beaches protected by coral reefs from the direct surf of the Indian Ocean. As early as the 15th century, Mossuril Bay served as an important anchorage for Arab traders and later for Portuguese expeditions en route to India. In Cabaceira Pequena, remains of colonial architecture can still be found today, including 18th and 19th-century mansions and churches that testify to the former prosperity of the slave and ivory trade. The geography of the coast favored the establishment of salt pans, which remain significant for the local economy to this day. Today, the Mossuril Coast is a destination for travelers seeking cultural heritage and untouched nature away from major tourist hubs, with the protection of marine biodiversity gaining increasing importance.
