Kanli Kula (Montenegro)

Weather…

Kanli Kula, translated as 'Bloody Tower,' is a prominent fortress in Herceg Novi built during the Ottoman rule in the 16th century. It sits about 85 meters above sea level, offering a wide view over the entrance of the Bay of Kotor. Originally, the fortress served as a defense structure and a notorious prison, as indicated by numerous inscriptions and drawings by former prisoners on the walls. The current form of the fortress results from various construction phases, with the Ottomans reinforcing it in 1539 after a brief Spanish occupation. In 1966, the interior of the fortress was converted into an open-air stage with over 1,000 seats, which is now used for film festivals and concerts. Despite severe damage from the 1979 earthquake, the fortress was faithfully restored.
