Wied Ghollieqa Nature Reserve (Malta)

Weather…

Wied Għollieqa Nature Reserve is situated in a valley between San Ġwann and Msida, adjacent to the University of Malta. Managed by Nature Trust Malta, the reserve serves as a vital sanctuary for local wildlife and indigenous flora within a densely populated urban area. The valley contains one of the most significant remnants of the Holm Oak (Quercus ilex) in Malta, alongside various native shrubs and trees. Historically, the area was saved from proposed development projects in the late 1980s, an event that became a cornerstone for modern environmental activism on the island. Today, it functions as an outdoor laboratory for ecological research and provides a home for hedgehogs, reptiles, and numerous migratory bird species. The reserve is essential for maintaining an ecological corridor and promoting environmental awareness among the student and local populations.

Etiquette
Stay on marked paths to avoid damaging fragile vegetation and disturbing bird nests. Do not leave any litter behind and take away everything you brought.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are essential for identifying the many bird species in trees and bushes. Sturdy footwear is recommended as paths can be rocky and uneven in places.
🧭
