Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum (Malta)

Weather…

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum in Paola is a unique underground prehistoric burial site and a UNESCO World Heritage site of immense significance. Carved directly into the globigerina limestone between 3300 and 3000 BC, this subterranean labyrinth served as a sanctuary and cemetery for many centuries. The complex is organized into three distinct levels, with the middle level containing the most architecturally advanced chambers, such as the 'Holy of Holies,' which replicates the features of megalithic temples above ground. The 'Oracle Room' is famous for its exceptional acoustic properties, where deep male voices resonate powerfully throughout the structure. Discovered by chance in 1902 during the construction of a water cistern, the site yielded the remains of an estimated 7,000 individuals and iconic artifacts like the 'Sleeping Lady' figurine. Due to the delicate microclimate required to preserve its ancient ochre paintings, visitor numbers are strictly controlled, making it one of Malta's most exclusive and sought-after cultural experiences.
