Hulhumalé Beach (Maldives)

Weather…

Hulhumalé Beach is situated on a reclaimed artificial island in the Kaafu Atoll, northeast of the capital, Malé. The land reclamation project officially commenced on October 16, 1997, aimed at addressing severe overpopulation and housing shortages in Malé. The first phase of development was completed in 2002, with the island engineered to an elevation of approximately 2 meters above sea level to provide enhanced resilience against rising sea levels compared to natural islands. The beach extends for several kilometers along the island's eastern coastline and is shielded by an artificial breakwater that dissipates the wave energy from the Indian Ocean. Geographically, Hulhumalé is directly linked to Malé and Velana International Airport via the Sinamalé Bridge complex, which opened in 2018. This unique infrastructure makes the beach one of the most accessible coastal areas in the Maldives. Today, the beach serves as a significant recreational hub and is considered a global case study for sustainable urban planning in response to the climate crisis.
