Nosy Tanikely is a small island south of Nosy Be and is considered one of Madagascar's most biodiverse marine protected areas. Since 2010, the surrounding marine area has been officially protected as a Marine National Park, which prohibits all fishing and has contributed to the recovery of its coral reefs. Geographically, the island is surrounded by a shallow reef plateau that reveals an enormous variety of fish, green sea turtles, and rays at depths of just a few meters. The crystal-clear water and gentle currents make Nosy Tanikely a well-suited location for snorkelers and research divers. On the island itself stands a historical lighthouse built by the French in 1908, which now provides panoramic views over the archipelago. The island's interior vegetation hosts a colony of fruit bats and various reptile species. Despite its small size, the island plays a central role in the ecotourism of the Diana region. Strict conservation measures have allowed the ecosystem to largely recover from previous human activities.

Getting there

This small marine reserve is easily accessible by a brief boat ride, often taking just thirty to forty-five minutes from the popular beaches of Nosy Be. Multiple local operators offer scheduled morning excursions or customizable private tours.

Best season

Visiting is most rewarding between April and November when visibility in the water is at its peak, providing excellent conditions for underwater exploration. The rainy season can bring muddy runoff that occasionally reduces the clarity of the surrounding ocean.

The island itself is compact, featuring a beautiful central sandy beach surrounded by lively coral reefs accessible directly from the shore. A short but fairly steep walking path leads up to a historic lighthouse offering sweeping panoramic views.

What to bring

Quality snorkeling equipment is highly recommended, though tour operators often provide basic sets for their guests. Bring plenty of reef-safe sunscreen, a sun hat, and appropriate footwear if you plan to hike up to the lighthouse viewpoint.

Parking

As an island marine reserve, no cars are permitted and parking facilities are fundamentally non-existent. Any land transportation used must be left at your resort or the designated harbor parking area back on the main island.

Swimmers should remain cautious of sharp corals and occasional sea urchins; wearing protective water shoes can prevent minor injuries. It is strictly forbidden to touch or stand on the fragile coral formations, and visitors must adhere to the reserve's conservation rules.

Time needed

A standard visit generally lasts around three to four hours, which provides ample time to explore the underwater marine life, relax on the beach, and take the short walk to the lighthouse. Most organized boat tours return before the late afternoon.
