Beaufort Castle (Lebanon)

Weather…

Beaufort Castle (Qala'at ash-Shqif) is a 12th-century Crusader fortress rising on a thousand-meter-high cliff above the Litani River. Its strategic location allowed defenders to see far across southern Lebanon and northern Israel. Initially, a smaller Islamic fortress stood here, which was captured by King Fulk of Jerusalem in 1139 and transformed into a massive knight's castle. Although Saladin conquered it in 1190 after a year-long siege, the Knights Templar later bought it back, and the Mamluk Sultan Baibars finally captured it in 1268. The fortress has a D-shaped layout with thick mountain stone walls and deep rock-cut moats. Throughout its history, it has also been the scene of many modern-day conflicts, which damaged the walls. Today, it has been partially restored and is one of the most visited historical landmarks in southern Lebanon.
