Wat Visoun (Laos)

Weather…

Wat Visoun, often referred to as Wat Wisunarat, was established in 1512 under King Visounnarath and stands today as the oldest operating temple in Luang Prabang. The architectural masterpiece is widely known for its distinctive stupa, the That Makmo or 'Watermelon Stupa', which earns its nickname from its unusual hemispherical dome resembling Sinhalese style. The temple once housed the revered Phra Bang Buddha before it was relocated to the Royal Palace. The present-day main building, dating to 1898, is a reconstruction, after the original wooden structure was burned down by the Chinese Black Flag army in 1887. Inside, it houses one of the largest collections of historic wooden Buddha statues from the 15th and 16th centuries.
