💡 Tips

  • The town's industrial past is visible everywhere; walking the central streets has great Soviet-era architecture photo opportunities.
  • Marshrutkas (minibuses) are the best way to get around or reach nearby valleys; confirm the destination before boarding.
  • The climate is highly continental; dress in layers, as evenings in the mountainous south can be quite chilly.
  • Don't miss the dramatic mountain views by taking a short walk up the hills just behind the town center.

Kadamjay lies in the Batken Region of southern Kyrgyzstan at about 1000 metres above sea level in a narrow valley of the Alay Range and has roughly 13,000 inhabitants. The town developed in the 1930s with the opening of one of the world's largest antimony deposits and during the Soviet era served as the central hub of antimony extraction for the entire Eastern Bloc. In the Second World War, Kadamjay supplied a substantial part of Soviet antimony demand, mainly for ammunition, batteries and bearings for metallurgical machinery. To this day the town hosts a large metallurgical combine that processes and exports antimony, mercury and tungsten. The surrounding area also produces apricots, walnuts and honey. The local population is multi-ethnic, with a sizeable Uzbek minority and close economic ties to the Fergana Valley.
