Hadum Mosque (Kosovo)

Weather…

The Hadum Mosque in Gjakova is one of the most significant examples of Ottoman architecture in Kosovo and serves as the religious heart of the Grand Bazaar. It was commissioned in 1594 by Hadum Suleiman Aga, a high-ranking official at the Ottoman imperial court. The mosque features a classical design with a large central dome and an elegant minaret that dominates the skyline of the historic center. Particularly noteworthy are the intricate floral and geometric wall paintings inside, as well as the finely carved minbar and mihrab. Originally, the mosque was part of a larger complex (külliye) that included a library, a madrasa (Islamic school), and a hamam, making Gjakova a prominent center of learning. Following destruction in 1999, the building was carefully restored with international assistance to preserve its historical integrity. Today, the Hadum Mosque is not only an active place of worship but also a protected cultural monument showcasing Ottoman artistic sophistication.
