Takwa Ruins (Kenya)

Weather…

The Takwa Ruins are the remains of a 15th and 16th-century Swahili trading town situated on the southeastern side of Manda Island in the Lamu District. This archaeological site covers approximately 5 hectares and was once a thriving settlement before its abandonment in the 17th century, likely due to a combination of fresh water depletion and regional conflicts. The most notable structures include the Friday Mosque, which features a distinctive pillar above the qibla, and various residential buildings constructed from coral rag and lime mortar. The layout of the town follows traditional Swahili urban planning, with narrow streets and communal spaces that reflect a sophisticated social structure. Excavations have revealed imported ceramics from China and Persia, indicating the town's active participation in the Indian Ocean trade networks. Since being gazetted as a national monument in 1982, Takwa has become an important site for understanding the decline of medieval coastal city-states.
