Fort Jesus Mombasa (Kenya)

Weather…

Fort Jesus is a monumental fortress in Mombasa, constructed by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596. It is regarded as one of the most outstanding examples of 16th-century Portuguese military architecture and was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Cairati. The fort was built to secure the Port of Mombasa and protect Portuguese trade routes across the Indian Ocean. A unique feature of the fortress is its layout, which follows the silhouette of a human body, adhering to Renaissance architectural principles. Over the centuries, the fort changed hands nine times and was the site of numerous battles between the Portuguese, Omanis, and British. Today, the fort houses a museum showcasing a significant collection of ceramics and artefacts recovered from archaeological excavations along the coast. Fort Jesus was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011. Its massive coral stone walls and well-preserved bastions stand as a testament to Mombasa's strategic importance as a historical hub of global commerce.
