Azagny Forest (Côte d’Ivoire)

Weather…

Azagny National Park, spanning an area of approximately 19,400 hectares, is located at the mouth of the Bandama River on the Gulf of Guinea. Founded in 1981, this park has been a designated RAMSAR site of international importance since 1996. The vegetation is a mosaic of swamp forests, mangroves, savannas, and coastal lagoons, creating an exceptional diversity of habitats. The park is renowned for its population of forest elephants, pygmy hippos, and various primate species such as chimpanzees. A special feature is the dense network of waterways traversing the park, making it a good refuge for numerous migratory birds. Despite its ecological significance, Azagny faces challenges such as poaching and agricultural encroachment on its borders. Researchers use the area extensively for studies on aquatic ecosystems and crocodile protection. Access to the park is often via the Grand-Lahou canal, making a visit a unique experience in an almost untouched coastal landscape. Azagny represents one of the last intact examples of Côte d'Ivoire's humid coastal forests.
