Herculaneum (Italy)

Weather…

Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town located near the Bay of Naples, destroyed alongside Pompeii during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Unlike Pompeii, which was buried under falling ash, Herculaneum was submerged by massive pyroclastic flows that reached depths of up to 25 meters. This volcanic material solidified into a dense layer of tuff, creating an airtight seal that preserved organic materials such as wooden furniture, carbonized bread, and even skeletal remains with remarkable detail. The town was smaller and wealthier than Pompeii, serving as a seaside resort for the Roman elite, which is reflected in its high-quality mosaics, intricate frescoes, and grand villas. A standout discovery is the Villa of the Papyri, which contained the only library of the ancient world to survive to modern times. Systematic excavations began in 1738, revealing multi-story buildings that offer unparalleled insights into Roman domestic life. Today, it is a protected UNESCO World Heritage site and a crucial area for archaeological research.
