Lorentz National Park in Papua province is the largest protected area in Southeast Asia, covering over 25,000 square kilometers. It stretches from snow-capped peaks exceeding 4,800 meters down to tropical marine environments, encompassing one of the most ecologically diverse profiles in the world. Due to its exceptional biological importance, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. The area hosts numerous endemic species and is home to several indigenous groups, such as the Asmat and Dani people, who have lived there for millennia. Geographical isolation has helped preserve many virgin forests and glacial formations. However, mining activities on the park's periphery and climate change, which causes the melting of equatorial glaciers, pose significant threats to this unique ecosystem.
