Balikpapan is a major port city on the east coast of Borneo island in the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan. It is often referred to as the 'Oil City' because its history and economic rise are closely tied to the discovery of oil in 1897. During World War II, Balikpapan was the site of fierce battles between Allied and Japanese forces, particularly during the Battle of Balikpapan in 1945. Today, the city is a modern industrial hub, hosting one of Indonesia's largest oil refineries operated by the state-owned Pertamina company. Geographically, the city is located on Balikpapan Bay and features a natural deep-water port essential for exporting oil, coal, and timber products. Balikpapan is regarded as one of Indonesia's cleanest and most livable cities, boasting well-developed infrastructure and the Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport. Despite its industrial focus, the surrounding area contains significant conservation sites such as the Wain River Forest, which is home to orangutans.
