Neskaupstaður is the most populous town in the municipality of Fjarðabyggð in the Icelandic Eastfjords, situated on the northern shore of Nordfjörður. For a long time, the settlement was only accessible by sea until a pass road over Oddsskarð was opened in 1949, now replaced by the modern Norðfjarðargöng tunnel. The town has a strong socialist tradition and was formerly often referred to as 'Little Moscow,' reflecting its local political history. Economically, Neskaupstaður is based on offshore fishing and fish processing, housing one of Europe's most modern fishmeal factories. The geographical environment is characterized by steep mountain flanks and avalanche risk, leading to the construction of impressive avalanche defense structures in recent years that are now part of the townscape. For nature enthusiasts, the Neskaupstaðarafréttur nature reserve features numerous hiking trails and opportunities for observing rare birds. The town also hosts the annual Eistnaflug festival, which attracts metal fans from all over the world and expands the region's cultural horizons.
