💡 Tips
- Book boat tours (Zodiac or amphibian) well in advance during the summer months as they sell out quickly.
- Always dress in warm layers. The constant wind blowing off the glacier over the ice water is freezing, even in mid-summer.
- Don't forget 'Diamond Beach'. Walk across the road under the bridge to see the icebergs washed up on the black sand beach.
- Beware of nesting arctic terns near the parking lots in summer; they will aggressively dive-bomb your head if you get close to their nests.
- Parking fees must be paid digitally via the Parka app, so have your smartphone ready and connected.
🍽 Food
The main parking lot usually hosts food trucks offering an excellent and warming seafood soup.
Try a unique twist on the classic Icelandic hot dog featuring lobster, often sold at the local food trucks.
The small café area by the ticket office is the first-rate place to grab a quick coffee before braving the windy beach.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Shopping is extremely limited here. The kiosk sells only basic necessities like hats, gloves, and simple souvenirs.
Buy postcards featuring the ice lagoon right from the ticket office to send memories from this unique location.
Simply walk about ten minutes along the lagoon's shore away from the parking lot. The crowds vanish, and you can hear the ice cracking in peace.
Just a 10-minute drive away is Fjallsárlón. It is smaller, but you are much closer to the glacier tongue and there are significantly fewer tourists.
Instead of staying right at the river mouth, walk further down the black sand beach to find isolated chunks of ice all to yourself.
Water temperature…
Jökulsárlón is Iceland's most famous glacier lagoon, located in the southeast of the country. It was formed by the retreat of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of the vast Vatnajökull ice cap. Reaching depths of 248 meters, it is the deepest lake in Iceland. The site is renowned for its massive icebergs that calve from the glacier and float slowly through the lagoon toward the Atlantic Ocean. The ice displays colors from brilliant white to deep electric blue, often streaked with black volcanic ash. Visitors can hike along the shoreline or join boat tours between May and October to navigate among the floating ice. Seals are frequently spotted resting on the ice floes. Directly across the road lies the Diamond Beach, where ice chunks washed ashore glisten like diamonds against the black volcanic sand. Access is easy via the Ring Road (Route 1). Facilities include parking areas, restrooms, and food trucks serving hot soup and snacks. As the lagoon continues to expand due to glacial melting, it serves as a stark visual reminder of climate change. For photographers, sunset and the aurora borealis season offer world-class opportunities. Even in summer, warm and windproof clothing is necessary due to the frigid microclimate.
