Kaposvár is the seat of Somogy County in southwestern Hungary, situated along the Kapos River amidst the rolling hills of the Somogy region. The city has a rich history and evolved into a significant industrial and cultural hub during the 19th century. Its city center is particularly attractive due to numerous Art Nouveau and Neoclassical buildings that create a harmonious urban landscape. A primary landmark is the Csiky Gergely Theatre, which opened in 1911 and remains one of Hungary's largest and most modern theatrical venues. The city's identity is deeply linked to the famous painter József Rippl-Rónai; his former home, the Roma Villa, now serves as a memorial museum showcasing his lively works. Kaposvár is also a key educational center with a campus of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, while the Virágfürdő (Flower Bath) features one of the region's largest thermal and adventure spa experiences. Kaposvár remained the seat of Somogy County in 2024-2025, combining food-industry reindustrialisation (after the closed sugar factory) with a cultural profile (Vaszary, Rippl-Rónai). Károly Szita (Fidesz) stayed on as mayor.
