Bugac
Bugac is one of the most authentic locations to experience the heritage of the Great Hungarian Plain. Part of the Kiskunság National Park, the area preserves pastoral traditions dating back centuries. Visitors can marvel at the impressive skills of the 'csikós' (horse herdsmen), who perform stunts on galloping horses. The Shepherd's Museum, housed in a traditional thatched building, displays tools and clothing typical of the nomadic lifestyle. Beyond horse shows, Bugac is crucial for the conservation of rare domestic animals like the Hungarian Grey cattle and Racka sheep. The landscape features unique sand dunes and juniper groves, convenient for hiking or horse-drawn carriage tours. Every two years, it hosts the Kurultáj, a large-scale tribal assembly of Turkic nations involving thousands of participants. Local gastronomy centers on open-fire cauldron dishes, with Grey cattle goulash being a must-try specialty. Bugac is easily reachable from Kecskemét in about 30 minutes by car or excursion buses. The best time to visit is from May to September, when most outdoor cultural events and equestrian performances are scheduled.
