Fort Drouet (Haiti)

Weather…

Fort Drouet is an impressive mountain fortress near Arcahaie, constructed shortly after Haiti's independence in 1804 as part of the national defense system. Built under the direction of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, this fort was intended to secure the strategic pass between the coast and the hinterland. The facility is notable for its excellent adaptation to the steep terrain, with natural rock formations integrated into the defensive lines. The massive walls housed barracks, powder magazines, and cisterns designed to withstand a long-term siege. Historically, Fort Drouet is a symbol of the military ingenuity of the former enslaved people who, as free citizens, fortified their country. The architectural integrity of the ruins is remarkable, as many of the original structures remain standing despite the lack of restoration funds. Visitors must undertake a steep climb but are rewarded with a panoramic view over the Arcahaie plain and the Gulf of Gonaïves, illustrating the strategic foresight of Haiti's founding fathers.
