Fort de la Rivière Blanche (Haiti)

Weather…

Fort de la Rivière Blanche is a historic coastal fortification in Haiti's West Department, constructed in the 18th century to protect the mouth of the Rivière Blanche and access to the fertile Cul-de-Sac plain. This region was of central importance to colonial sugar production, which is why the fort held a key role in the defensive architecture of Saint-Domingue. During the Haitian Revolution, the fort was a site of strategic maneuvers, as it could control maritime traffic to Port-au-Prince. The architecture combines classic European fortification elements with local adaptations to the humid coastal climate, using coral stone and brick for the masonry. Historically, the fort marks the resistance of Haitian troops against British invasion forces in the 1790s. Today, the ruins are a significant site for the study of military history and the economic defense strategies of the Caribbean during the Age of Enlightenment.
