Mazaruni Rainforests

The Mazaruni Rainforests in western Guyana form part of the vast, pristine Amazonian rainforest system. Located in the Mazaruni River basin, this region is characterized by extremely high rainfall and dense, multi-layered vegetation. Geologically, the area sits on the ancient Guiana Shield, resulting in nutrient-poor but mineral-rich soils. The rainforests are a biodiversity hotspot, home to rare species such as the jaguar, various monkey species, and an enormous variety of tropical birds. Historically, the region is primarily known for its wealth of gold and diamonds, which has attracted prospectors to these remote areas since the late 19th century. However, this mining poses a constant threat to the delicate ecosystem and the water quality of the rivers. The Akawaio and Arekuna indigenous communities live here in harmony with nature, preserving their traditional ways of life. In recent years, there have been increased efforts to make mining more sustainable and to permanently conserve the forest through protected areas.
