Nhacra is a strategically significant town located in the Oio Region of western Guinea-Bissau. It is situated approximately 30 kilometers northeast of the capital city, Bissau, and functions as a vital transportation hub on the main road connecting the center with the northern provinces. The local economy is almost exclusively driven by agriculture, with the cultivation and export of cashew nuts serving as the primary source of income for the resident population. Geographically, Nhacra lies in a transition zone between the coastal plains and the slightly higher interior, characterized by extensive palm groves and fertile soils. During the War of Independence between 1963 and 1974, the surrounding area was a site of significant logistical movements by PAIGC guerrillas. Today, the town serves as the administrative center of its eponymous sector and is essential for the regional food supply of the metropolitan area. Ethnic diversity is high, with the Balanta and Mandinka groups significantly shaping the social structure of the local community.
