Zakynthos Town, the principal settlement and port of the island of Zakynthos, lies elegantly along a wide semicircular bay beneath the historic Bohali Hill. Historically celebrated as the 'Venice of the East' due to its sophisticated urban design, the city suffered massive destruction during the 1953 Ionian earthquake, which leveled nearly all its Venetian mansions. The subsequent reconstruction adhered to strict architectural guidelines to revive the island's unique aesthetic, featuring spacious squares and arched walkways. Solomos Square, the city's largest open space, commemorates the birthplace of the Greek national poet, Dionysios Solomos, and is anchored by the impressive Post-Byzantine Museum. Another major landmark is the Church of Agios Dionysios, which houses the relics of the island’s patron saint and features a detached bell tower modeled after St. Mark's Campanile in Venice. Ascending to the Venetian Castle at the summit of Bohali provides panoramic vistas of the sprawling harbor and the blue expanse of the Ionian Sea. The town remains a bastion of Heptanesian culture, where traditional serenades known as 'kantades' can still be heard in the tavernas of the waterfront.
