Fort San Sebastian (Ghana)

Weather…

Fort San Sebastian in Shama is the third oldest European fortification in Ghana, established by the Portuguese around 1526. Situated at the mouth of the Pra River, the fort was initially built to secure the Portuguese gold trade against French and British interlopers. In 1642, the Dutch West India Company captured the fort, subsequently expanding and strengthening its defenses to suit their commercial interests. The fort is remarkably well-preserved, showcasing a blend of Portuguese foundational structures and Dutch architectural enhancements. It is historically significant as the final residence and burial place of Anton Wilhelm Amo, the first African-born person to earn a doctorate in philosophy from a German university in the 18th century. The fort was ceded to the British in 1872 along with other Dutch possessions on the Gold Coast. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, Fort San Sebastian stands as a stark reminder of the long history of European presence and trade. Its strategic location has wide-open views of the river's confluence with the Atlantic Ocean, symbolizing the meeting point of cultures and commerce.
