Fort Apollonia (Ghana)

Weather…

Fort Apollonia is located in Beyin, in the Western Region of Ghana, and was constructed by the British between 1768 and 1770. The fort takes its name from Cape Apollonia, so named by a Portuguese explorer who first sighted it on St. Apollonia's Day. It was built primarily to protect British interests in the gold trade and to serve as a military outpost against Dutch influence in the area. The fort features a classic square design with four corner bastions, constructed largely from locally quarried limestone. In 1868, control of the fort was transferred to the Dutch as part of a territorial exchange treaty, but it returned to British hands just four years later in 1872. After decades of deterioration, the fort underwent extensive restoration and now serves as the Museum of Nzema History and Culture. The museum showcases the rich heritage of the Nzema people, including traditional regalia, artifacts, and historical documents from the colonial era. Overlooking a pristine stretch of Atlantic beach, Fort Apollonia is a significant cultural landmark and a starting point for travelers visiting the nearby stilt village of Nzulezo.
