Fort Prinzenstein is a Danish fortification located in Keta, in southeastern Ghana, built in 1784. It is notable as one of the few major forts situated east of the Volta River and played a significant role in the Danish slave trade until Denmark became the first European nation to abolish the trade in 1792. The fort was strategically positioned on a narrow spit of land between the Keta Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. Over the decades, it also served as a colonial prison and administrative center under British rule. Tragically, a large portion of the fort's structure has been lost to the sea due to severe coastal erosion and powerful tidal waves, particularly during the late 20th century. Today, the remaining ruins of the walls and dungeons provide a haunting glimpse into the past and serve as a memorial to the victims of the slave trade. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Fort Prinzenstein is a subject of ongoing conservation discussions to protect its remnants from further destruction. It remains a vital historical landmark for the Ewe people and a symbol of the region's complex colonial encounters.

Visiting
Fort Prinzenstein in Keta is partly reclaimed by the Atlantic Ocean and only partially accessible. The ruins can be viewed from the outside; the interior is not open.
Typical hours
As the site is not regularly guarded, access is theoretically possible at any time. However, visitors should consider local tides, as the beach is partly flooded.

Photography of the ruins from the outside is possible at any time. The sea-washed walls provide dramatic photo subjects, especially at sunset.
Time needed
Viewing the exterior takes about 15 to 20 minutes. If you also explore the beach and surroundings, allow 30 minutes.

Getting there
Keta lies on the coast east of Accra. From the main road, reach the fort via a beachside path. Parking is available near the market.
