Obuasi is a major mining city in the Ashanti Region of Ghana and is home to one of the world's richest gold mines. Set in a hilly landscape approximately 64 kilometers south of Kumasi, the city has been intrinsically linked to gold extraction for over a century. The Obuasi Mine, currently operated by AngloGold Ashanti, began commercial operations in 1897 and has since produced vast quantities of high-grade gold. The economic and social fabric of the city is almost entirely centered around the mining industry, which is evident in its specialized infrastructure and residential layouts. Obuasi is also recognized for its environmental reclamation efforts aimed at mitigating the long-term impacts of extensive mining activities. The city features well-developed healthcare and educational facilities that were originally established to support the mining workforce. Despite the dominance of gold, agriculture, particularly the cultivation of cocoa and citrus fruits, remains an important economic activity in the surrounding rural areas.
