Narikala Fortress (Georgia)

Weather…

Narikala is an ancient fortress overlooking the Georgian capital Tbilisi and the Mtkvari River. The complex was established in the 4th century as Shuris-tsikhe and was expanded over the centuries by various invaders, including Arabs, Mongols, and Persians. The current walls mostly date back to the 16th and 17th centuries, after the fortress was significantly expanded under the rule of the Umayyad Caliphate in the 7th century. A severe earthquake in 1827 destroyed large parts of the inner fortifications and the original St. Nicholas Church. The latter was reconstructed between 1996 and 1997 on its ancient foundations and is now a central feature of the complex. Narikala served not only as a defensive bastion but also as a residence for local rulers and a symbol of strategic control over the Silk Road routes through the Caucasus.
