Khulo
Khulo is a quiet find tucked away in the mountainous highlands of the Adjara region, appealing strongly to adventure seekers and nature lovers. Far from the bustling coastal city of Batumi, this serene town features an authentic, untamed Georgian experience. The most famous attraction here is the dramatic, Soviet-era aerial cable car that connects Khulo with the village of Tago, crossing a breathtakingly deep river gorge without any central support pillars. The surrounding nature is pristine, characterized by dense coniferous forests, steep valleys, and rolling alpine meadows. It serves as an excellent starting point for hiking and off-roading towards the spectacular Goderdzi Pass or the pretty Green Lake (Mtsvane Tba). Visitors can explore rural settlements where traditional wooden houses dot the landscape, and local farming practices have remained unchanged for generations. Getting to Khulo involves a scenic, albeit winding, drive from Batumi, taking around two to three hours by marshrutka or car. The local Adjarian cuisine is hearty and unique, featuring rich dairy dishes like borano and sinori, first-rate for the cooler mountain climate. Summer and early autumn are the best seasons to visit when the mountain roads are fully accessible.
