Janjanbureh, formerly known as Georgetown, is a historically significant town in The Gambia located on MacCarthy Island in the Gambia River. Founded in 1823 as a settlement for freed slaves, the town served for many decades as a major administrative and economic hub for the British colonial administration. The island itself is approximately 10 kilometers long and is accessible only by ferry, which gives the town a secluded and timeless character. Janjanbureh is home to numerous remains of colonial architecture, including the old government house and Armitage High School, the country's oldest secondary school, established in 1927. Beyond its colonial history, the town is renowned for the Kankurang mask festival, which has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage. The surrounding area is characterized by fertile marshlands and features excellent birdwatching opportunities. Today, Janjanbureh is an essential cultural destination reflecting The Gambia's complex history from slavery to independence.
