Best season
The dry season from June to September is the best time for gorilla trekking in the Moukalaba-Doudou area, as trails are less muddy and animals easier to find. In the rainy season (October-May) the forests are denser and trekking conditions more challenging.
Best time of day
Gorilla trekking usually starts early morning to observe the animals as they wake up and forage. Guides lead groups to the gorillas' last sleeping sites to optimize the encounter.
Etiquette
Keep a minimum distance of 7 metres from gorillas to avoid disease transmission. Photography without flash is allowed, loud talking and sudden movements are prohibited.
What to bring
Sturdy, waterproof footwear and long trousers are essential for rainforest trekking. Insect repellent, rain jacket and gloves protect against insects and thorns.
Getting there
The Moukalaba-Doudou area is in southern Gabon and accessible via the town of Tchibanga. From there, unpaved roads lead to the trekking start points; a 4WD vehicle is required.
