Fort d'Aumale Site (Gabon)

Weather…

Fort d'Aumale was the first permanent French settlement in Gabon, established on June 18, 1843, on the northern shore of the Gabon Estuary. Its construction marked the official beginning of French colonial presence in Equatorial Africa, initially serving as a fortified naval base. The facility was named after Henri d'Orléans, Duke of Aumale, a son of the French King Louis-Philippe I. The site was strategically chosen to control maritime trade routes and to militarily secure treaties previously signed with local Mpongwe chiefs, such as King Denis Rapontchombo. One of the primary tasks of the garrison was the suppression of the illegal slave trade in the region, which persisted in isolated bays despite official bans. Over time, the modern capital of Libreville developed around the fort, having been officially founded in 1849 as a settlement for slaves liberated from illegal transport vessels.
