Baraka Mission Station (Gabon)

Weather…

The Baraka Mission Station in Libreville was founded in 1842 by John Leighton Wilson, an American missionary with the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). It is the oldest Protestant mission site in Gabon and played a fundamental role in introducing Western education and establishing written forms of local languages. Wilson and his successors worked closely with the Mpongwe people, translated the Bible, and created the first grammars and dictionaries of the Mpongwe language. The station was built on a hill providing a wide view over the estuary and was strategically located near the residences of local kings. In addition to religious work, Baraka was a center for social reform and provided sanctuary for slaves liberated from illegal trade. Today, the grounds house historic buildings and cemeteries honoring the early pioneers of the mission and remain an active religious and cultural center of the Protestant Church of Gabon.
